Our solutionCASCADE will develop a measurement-based, technology neutral, fault detection approach for the development of ICT solutions that can integrate with Building Automation and Management Systems to develop facility-specific operational guidelines for the radical reduction of energy consumption (20%) and CO2 emissions (20%) of EU-27 Airports.
From Analysis to Energy Savings, the Energy Management Action System: EN 16001/ISO 50001 will form an important part of the future of energy management. Fault detection and other feedback from control and monitoring systems will be integrated with EN 16001/ISO 50001.
It has been found that the EN 16001 approach helps overcome the “Energy Management Challenge”, which is:
Why Fault Detection Diagnosis (FDD)? Fault detection aims to recognize faults quickly, systematically and – as far as possible – automatically before additional damage to the system occurs or before the system fails or before too much energy is wasted.
The figure below shows one result of FDD. It is a set of carpet plots indicating the operation of a pump and the supply temperature in a heating circuit over 8 months. The plot begins with the pump operating 24 hours per day (section 1). The plot ends with optimal performance for that particular device. In between is the energy consumption profile resultant from a series of interventions over the time period. In some cases, these interventions were simple set point changes and implementation of more effective schedule (section 2). In other cases, physical adjustments (hardware) were required (section 3). Final optimisation was achieved through how the two pumps acted as a system (section 4).
